On Monday 3 February, the Council of Europe announced the creation of a Division on Migration and Refugees within the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law.
This division will take over the programme of activities described in the “Action Plan on Protecting Vulnerable Persons in the Context of Migration and Asylum in EUROPE 2021-2025”, hitherto carried out by the Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Migration and Refugees, a post created after the 2015 migration crisis.
The aim of this division will be to support the Member States, in particular by activating the “Network of Focal Points on Migration”, to ensure internal coordination within the Council of Europe and to cooperate with international partners such as the United Nations (Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, International Organization for Migration, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights) and the European Union (Frontex, European Union Agency for Asylum, Fundamental Rights Agency).
A partnership will also be pursued with the main civil society organisations.
