Gas transit agreement via Ukraine terminated, Robert Fico raises possibility of importing gas from Azerbaijan

Following his second meeting with EU Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen on Monday 3 February, on the sidelines of the informal ‘retreat’ of EU leaders (see other news), Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that his country was working with the European Commission on an option to import gas from Azerbaijan.

Such an option was also envisaged by the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, following the end of the agreement for the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory on 1 January (see EUROPE 13566/17).

According to Mr Fico, importing Azeri gas into Slovakia would make it possible to “ensure a good quality and secure gas supply for our country in terms of internal consumption, but also to gradually re-establish gas transit(see EUROPE 13556/25).

On the social network X, Dan Jørgensen, who did not go into further detail about this exchange, said that the search for solutions to mitigate the end of gas transit via Ukraine and secure supplies was “in line with the European Commission’s REPowerEU strategy”.
