24/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – During a debate in the plenary session of the European Parliament on Tuesday 23 April, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, urged all Haitian political forces to continue their work on forming a transitional government by appointing a Prime Minister and selecting the members of the Provisional Electoral Council. “As a long-standing partner of Haiti, the European Union is determined to remain committed and to support the Haitian people at this difficult time”, said Mr Lenarčič in Strasbourg, pointing out that an interim government could allow an international security mission to be deployed on the island (see EUROPE 13373/5). Several MEPs expressed concern about the seriousness of the humanitarian situation in Haiti, which has been plunged into a major resurgence of violence by armed groups since the beginning of March (see EUROPE 13368/30).
