11/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 11 March, the European Commission said it was “extremely concerned” by the violence in Haiti. In recent days, the capital, Port-au-Prince, has been the scene of clashes between police and armed gangs who have attacked strategic sites, including the presidential palace, police stations and prisons, according to AFP. The city is “under siege”, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Several Western embassies have evacuated their staff. “We have decided to reduce our activities on the ground and have moved the staff of the European Union delegation in Port-au-Prince to a safer location outside the country (...). At present, we have evacuated all EU staff from Haiti”, said Peter Stano, spokesman for the European External Action Service, on Monday. (BD)
