11/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – At the opening of the plenary session on Monday 11 March, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, invited MEPs to sign a postcard addressed to the 1,500 political prisoners in Belarus to show that they stand firmly by “those who are fighting for freedom and democracy”. “Through this initiative, as part of a day of solidarity, we are once again expressing our firm position with regard to people who are subject to repression for political reasons”, explained Ms Metsola. She promised that the MEPs would “never turn a blind eye to Lukashenko’s relentless repression of dissidents, all those tortured, arrested and imprisoned for political reasons”, adding that one day soon, the political prisoners’ fight “for freedom will be crowned with success”.
