24/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – At its plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday 24 April, the European Parliament approved (by 464 votes to 115 with 13 abstentions) the provisional agreement with the Council of the EU on the regulation on environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings. The aim of the new regulation is to enhance the reliability and comparability of ESG ratings by improving the transparency and integrity of rating providers’ operations and preventing potential conflicts of interest. “These regulations were eagerly awaited by all stakeholders. We have improved on what the European Commission had proposed”, said the rapporteur, Aurore Lalucq (S&D, French), at a press briefing the previous day. The agreement provides for the disaggregation of environmental, social and governance criteria. It still has to be approved by the EU Council before it can come into force.
