Thirty-four European companies call on Commission to get tough with Apple on DMA

In a letter dated 1 March and sent to Commissioners Margrethe Vestager and Thierry Breton, 34 European companies, including Spotify, BeReal and Deezer, set out their concerns about Apple’s compliance with the new rules of the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

We are very concerned that Apple’s proposed scheme for compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), as communicated on 25 January 2024, will not meet the law’s requirements”, they write.

A little over a month ago, Apple announced that it had made changes to iOS, Safari and the App Store in the European Union for distributing apps in the EU. For the signatories of the letter, many of these changes “do not comply” with the DMA rules.

“Apple’s new terms not only disregard both the spirit and letter of the law, but if left unchanged, make a mockery of the DMA and the considerable efforts by the European Commission and EU institutions to make digital markets competitive”, the letter argues.

The 34 companies are calling on the Commission to take “swift, timely and decisive” action against Apple: “[this response] will serve as a litmus test of the DMA and whether it can deliver for Europe’s citizens and economy”, the signatories conclude.
