In a report published on 29 February, the Climate Action Network Europe (CAN) coalition of NGOs condemns shortcomings in the transparency of and access to climate and energy data within the European Union.
Entitled ‘Transparency and access to data on climate action’, the document, drawn up by the Together for 1.5 alliance, highlights the shortcomings in the availability and quality of environmental information in the Member States, despite the obligations of the Aarhus Convention requiring them to disclose this information.
The consortium therefore calls for urgent action to improve the situation, stressing the importance of informed participation by civil society and other stakeholders in political decision-making.
The report presents information on the experience and obstacles encountered in collecting climate and energy data relevant to assessing the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) and proposes recommendations for better updating, quality and accessibility of data, recalling that transparent and credible public policies depend on accurate government data.
This publication also anticipates the revision of the Governance of the Energy Union and Climate Action Regulation.
