04/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 4 March, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called on the European Union to impose “comprehensive” sanctions on food and agricultural imports from Russia and Belarus, in response to protests by European farmers. According to Mr Tusk, European sanctions would make it possible to “protect the EU’s agricultural and food markets more effectively” and to “fully unblock the possibilities for exporting Ukrainian products (...) to third countries”. Latvia has already banned food imports from Russia and Belarus, including via intermediate countries. The export and import restrictions imposed on Russia exclude products primarily intended for consumption and products related to food and agriculture, so as not to harm the Russian population, the EU Council states on its website.
