15/02/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission decided on Wednesday 15 February to refer Greece to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for failure to fulfil its obligations under the Single European Railway Area Directive (2012/34/EU). Under this Directive, Member States had to sign a contractual agreement between the competent national authority and the railway infrastructure manager by 16 June 2015. The agreement, which is intended to increase the transparency of future projects on the rail networks, is to contain provisions such as the amount of funds allocated to infrastructure services and user-oriented performance targets. In Greece’s case, no agreement has yet been signed between the national authorities and the infrastructure manager. The European Commission launched an infringement procedure against Greece in December 2020 and sent a reasoned opinion a year later. (TM)
