15/02/23 (Agence Europe) – Gravely concerned about the deteriorating health of the former President, the European Parliament called for his release on Wednesday 15 February so that he can receive appropriate medical treatment abroad “for humanitarian reasons and to reduce political polarisation”. In the joint resolution adopted by the S&D, Renew Europe, EPP, Greens/EFA and ECR Groups (577 votes in favour, 33 against and 26 abstentions), MEPs consider that the treatment of prisoners “is a litmus test of the Georgian government’s commitment to European values and its declared European aspirations, including EU candidate status”. In their view, the case of Mr Saakashvili further highlights the importance of implementing a genuine reform of the judicial system. See the resolution: https://aeur.eu/f/5ci (CG)
