The European Parliament is confident that negotiations with the Czech Presidency of the EU Council and the European Commission (‘trilogue’), on the proposed EU Regulation on the General Safety of Non-Food Products (GSR), can be concluded by the end of November. This regulation aims to adapt a 2001 directive to the booming online markets and the development of new technologies.
Members of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) were briefed on Monday 10 October on the progress made in the 1st trilogue (see EUROPE 13022/17).
“Parliament wants to ensure that only safe products can be placed on the Single market, that if an unsafe product enters the internal market it can be withdrawn quickly, and that businesses can continue to offer consumers a wide range of products without additional administrative burden. The Czech Presidency underlines that there is much more convergence than divergence between the positions. Parliament is hoping for a quick agreement”, according to the European Parliament’s chief negotiator, Dita Charanzová (Renew Europe, Czech).
The next trilogue will take place on 8 November and the third - possibly the last - is scheduled for 28 November. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
