11/10/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Monday, 10 October, MEPs on the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport [and Tourism] adopted the report by Roberts Zīle (ECR, Latvian) on introducing strengthened stability requirements and standardising them with the stability requirements defined by the International Maritime Organization for ro-ro passenger ships. As a reminder, this text—presented by the European Commission in May 2022—should notably lead to a modification of the current requirements applicable to the safety of ro-ro passenger ships following damage. Moreover, the text aims to revise and maintain high safety standards, even though ro-ro passenger ships are particularly vulnerable in the event they are damaged. Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport [and Tourism] also voted in favour of the negotiating mandate in preparation for future discussions with the EU Council. (TM)
