On Monday 10 October the European Parliament Committee on Employment and Social Affairs endorsed the European Commission’s proposal to update the guidelines for Member States’ employment policies (see EUROPE 12958/1), while strengthening the dimension of labour market inclusion and job quality.
MEPs sent this message by approving the report by Alicia Homs Ginel (S&D, Spanish) by 35 votes to 4 with 2 abstentions.
The guidelines are aimed at “boosting the demand for labour, enhancing supply and access to employment, and promoting equal opportunities, particularly for vulnerable groups”, says the European Parliament in a statement.
The EU and Member States should develop “a common strategy aimed at improving the quality of employment, working conditions and wage standards through a sustainable model”, say the MEPs, who also want the European Parliament to have a greater level of involvement in these guidelines.
The committee also insists on ensuring the right to disconnect, fair pay, decent working conditions and access to social protection for trainees and apprentices.
It also calls for “a new social resilience package including the continuation and refinancing of the EU’s temporary Support to mitigate Unemployment Risks in an Emergency (SURE) and the establishment of a European unemployment reinsurance scheme”.
Finally, it also argues in favour of a directive on minimum incomes.
