On Tuesday 11 October, EU Education Commissioner Mariya Gabriel presented a practical European Commission handbook that aims to increase the digital literacy of teachers and provides them with tools to take action in the classroom against online disinformation.
While fake news spreads “six times faster” than news, “only 53%” of 15-year-olds say they have been trained to detect ‘fake news’, the Commissioner noted.
According to her, the Commission’s handbook includes exercises on how to encourage “healthy behaviour” in the digital environment in three areas: strengthening teachers’ digital skills, providing keys to detect disinformation in all its forms, and assessing pupils’ digital skills.
Developed with the support of a group of experts, the practical guide is accompanied by a report on experts’ main recommendations.
