17/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - Euro-Toques International, the European Community of Chefs, which is made up of over 3,500 chefs from all over Europe and aims to protect the "identity of the European culinary heritage", food quality and respect for the environment "via sustainable agriculture and fisheries", is concerned for the future of fishing if "protection measures" are not taken soon. Ahead of the discussion in Council on Monday on the regulation on the sustainable exploitation of fish resources in the Mediterranean, the organisation, which is concerned that "wild sea fish are becoming rarer", has published a press release, in which it calls for: - a total 5-year moratorium on the industrial fishing of farmed cod and a total moratorium on the industrial fishing of wild cod; - a 5-year moratorium on the industrial fishing of sole, which should be exclusively reserved for small boats; - a total ban on the industrial sea-fishing of wild salmon and sea trout within a 50km radius of a salmon river or river-mouth; - a total ban on fishing nets in constant contact with the sea bed; - setting fishing times in relation to breeding seasons.
