Proposal to allow Member States to join new compensation fund for victims of oil pollution

Brussels, 09/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Commission adopted a draft decision to allow Member States to sign the new international protocol for the victims of oil spills. When it comes into force the protocol, adopted by the International Maritime Organisation on 16 May, will greatly boost the "The International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds" or IOPC Funds to nearly EUR 1 billion, five time the current level (see Europe of 17 May).
