Commission has given itself until Christmas to strike agreement on protecting airline passengers' privacy and striking a balance between civil liberties, airline interests and transatlantic relations

Brussels, 09/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, Commissioner Fritz Bolkestein said the European Commission was giving itself until Christmas to find a way of breaking the deadlock with the United States over protection of airline passengers' privacy. Washington's pledges to date do not come close to meeting the requirements of the personal data protection directive, Bolkestein told the European Parliament's Citizens' Freedoms and Rights Committee.
