European Parliament criticises Greek ban preventing women from going to Mount Athos

Brussels, 09/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament has again called on the Greek government to lift the ban on women accessing Mount Athos. In a resolution fundamental rights in the EU (see Europe of 6 September, p.5), the European Parliament calls on the Greek government to abolish the legal measures in Article 43b of Greek law 2623/1953/A-258 imposing a penalty of between two and twelve months in prison for women daring to access Mount Athos.
