EU calls for release of Mr. Birdal and reminds Ankara of the Copenhagen criteria

Brussels, 31/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - On behalf of the European Union, the Portuguese Presidency has made a declaration on the return to prison of Mr. Birdal, Turkish human rights defender, in which it stresses that his renewed detention does not correspond to the status of candidate for membership of the European Union conferred on Turkey at the Helsinki December 1999 Summit.
