European Commission announces ban on nitrous oxide cylinders in EU from 1 February 2027

During a debate at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday 12 March, the European Commission defended an EU-wide ban from February 2027 on the sale of nitrous oxide to private individuals, the misuse of which has become a dangerous scourge.

Known as ‘laughing gas’, the product is sold in cartridge or cylinder form and is inhaled for its euphoric effects, usually using balloons. Several EU countries have already legislated to ban sales to the general...
