Applications for international protection in the European Union fell by a significant 19% in 2025, with around 822,000 cases submitted, compared with over a million the previous year, according to the annual report of the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA), published on Tuesday 3 March. According to the authors, this decline can be attributed more to a “structural reconfiguration of asylum dynamics” than to a definitive resolution of the global crises.
