On Tuesday 3 March, The Left Group in the European Parliament said that recent statements by EU leaders “refusing to condemn the bombing of Iran constitute an abandonment of international law, which will see the world become a much more dangerous place for all”.
“The US-Israeli attack on Iran flagrantly violates international law and the UN Charter. Yet shockingly Commission President von der Leyen and Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas refuse to condemn it,” denounced Marc Botenga (Belgian) in a press release, adding that the war in the Middle East was “not about democracy or human rights”.
The Left highlighted that only the Iranian people could decide their future beyond the Islamic regime, free from international interference and “from the illusion that countries can be bombed into democracy”.
Only the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has openly condemned the strikes, saying they could aggravate regional tensions and “contribute to a more uncertain and hostile international order”. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
