22/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – In a resolution that was adopted on Thursday, 22 January, the European Parliament recognised businessman Nasry Asfura as the “president-elect” of Honduras. MEPs are encouraging the outgoing government to respect the election results and believe President Xiomara Castro’s decree ordering a recount of the votes to be “unconstitutional and an attack on Honduran democracy”. The European External Action Service (EEAS) had expressed in early January that it was concerned about this decree (see EUROPE 13785/19). MEPs are calling for an end to the violence and intimidation—particularly [those actions] targeting members of the opposition like Gladys López. Mr Asfura had been declared the winner at the end of 2025 with a lead of less than 1% over Salvador Nasralla (see EUROPE 13780/19), who denounced these results as fraudulent.
