On Wednesday 21 January, European Parliament reiterated that the EU sanctions regime against individuals and entities responsible for serious human rights violations around the world (Magnitsky Act) was an “indispensable foreign policy tool”.
In the report by Antonio López-Istúriz White (EPP, Spanish) that they adopted (440 votes in favour, 127 against and 59 abstentions) on combating impunity through EU sanctions, including the EU global human rights sanctions regime, MEPs explain that the regime still faces operational, geographical and legal obstacles that prevent it from reaching its full potential.
European Parliament therefore calls for an impact assessment of the regime’s effectiveness, its harmonisation with international partners, better application by Member States, because “EU restrictive measures can only be fully effective if they are interpreted, enforced and implemented consistently, swiftly and uniformly by all Member States”, and for greater transparency and accountability.
MEPs also reaffirmed their support for integrating anti-corruption sanctions into the EU framework.
