Bulgaria ordered to pay €1.5 million for failing to transpose revised Renewable Energy Directive on time

22/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 22 January, the Court of Justice of the European Union ordered Bulgaria to pay a lump sum of €1.5 million for failing to transpose the ‘RED II’ Directive on renewable energy (2018/2001) by the deadline set, i.e. June 2021 (see EUROPE B13108A24). In the event that the failure to fulfil established obligations persists at the date of delivery of the present judgment, Bulgaria is also ordered to pay a daily penalty payment of €9,000 until...
