22/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 22 January, the Court of Justice of the European Union ordered Bulgaria to pay a lump sum of €1.5 million for failing to transpose the ‘RED II’ Directive on renewable energy (2018/2001) by the deadline set, i.e. June 2021 (see EUROPE 13108/24). In the event that the failure to fulfil established obligations persists at the date of delivery of the present judgment, Bulgaria is also ordered to pay a daily penalty payment of €9,000 until such time as it puts an end to that failure.
