EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Iran

European Parliament calls for sanctions against those responsible for violence against peaceful protesters

On Thursday 22 January, MEPs adopted a joint resolution (562 votes in favour, 9 against and 57 abstentions) calling for sanctions against those responsible for the violence against peaceful demonstrators in Iran, expressing their “unequivocal” condemnation of the “brutal repression and mass murders” by the regime.

MEPs demand that the Iranian authorities unconditionally end the violence against peaceful protesters, immediately halt all executions and cease the murders and repression, and that the fundamental rights of Iranians be upheld unconditionally and at all times.

The Parliament therefore calls on the Council to proceed “without delay with the full designation” of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including the Basij militia and the Quds Force, as “terrorist organisations”.

The EU’s Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime and other restrictive measures, including asset freezes and visa bans, must be expanded and strictly enforced against all Iranian officials responsible for repression and all entities controlled by or acting on behalf of the Office of the Supreme Leader, say MEPs.

More broadly, the Parliament calls on the European Commission and the Member States to exert effective pressure on this regime, which is “inhumane”. It gives its “full” support to the Iranian opposition and invites the High Representative to initiate in an inclusive dialogue with Iran’s democratic opposition.
