EU ready to work with new Honduran President Nasry Asfura

06/01/2026 (Agence Europe)At the end of December, the European Union congratulated businessman Nasry Asfura on his election as President of Honduras following a “long and tedious” electoral process, and said it was ready to work with the future Honduran administration to deepen bilateral cooperation, according to Anitta Hipper, spokeswoman for the European External Action Service (EEAS) (see EUROPE 13756/39). Noting the proclamation of the results by the National Electoral Council, the European Union’s election observation mission, led by Francisco Assis (S&D, Portuguese), called on all parties to respect the results and to settle any related disputes through the Electoral Justice Tribunal. It will publish a final report containing recommendations for future elections. Backed by US President Donald Trump, Mr Asfura was declared the winner more than three weeks after a close election, marked in particular by accusations of fraud made by his opponent Salvador Nasralla, another conservative, who lost by less than one percentage point.
