Poland calls on EU to help curb content calling for ‘Polexit’ on TikTok

Faced with a wave of TikTok content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) and openly calling for Poland to leave the EU (‘Polexit’), Warsaw has asked the European Commission to invoke the prerogatives of the ‘DSA’ governing digital markets to investigate the management of the platform.

The Polish government sees Russian interference behind the proliferation of this content, and would like the EU to hold the platform to account, as it has already been criticised for its poor management of online disinformation (see EUROPE 13539/10).

The content posted online constitutes a threat to public order, the security of information and the integrity of democratic processes in Poland and the European Union as a whole”, stated the Deputy Minister for Digitalisation, Dariusz Standerski, in a letter sent to the Commission on Tuesday 30 December.

In his view, the very nature of the content and its distribution proves that TikTok is not complying with the DSA rules.

The Commission, which has acknowledged receipt of the Polish letter, points out that the major platforms subject to European rules must take responsibility for reducing the risks associated with AI-generated content. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
