ECHA invites companies to start notifying their intentions under Drinking Water Directive

On Monday 5 January, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched an online tool for industry to notify plans to update the European Positive Lists of substances authorised for use in materials that come into contact with drinking water.

Through ECHA’s industry portal, companies can indicate which substances they wish to maintain, add or remove from the European Positive Lists. Notifications under the Drinking Water Directive are prepared in IUCLID (International Uniform Chemical Information Database) format.

ECHA has published: - a manual entitled ‘How to prepare a Drinking Water Directive Notification of intention’; - a guidance document on notifications of intention; - a video tutorial on generating the IUCLID notification of intention dossier.

ECHA invites all interested parties to read these documents and the tutorial before preparing their notifications. Once the notification of intent has been submitted, notifiers have 12 months in which to submit their application. From January 2027, notifiers will be able to start submitting requests to amend the European Positive Lists.
