06/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – On the evening of Monday 5 January, the spokesman for the European External Action Service welcomed the holding of presidential elections in Guinea on 28 December, saying that this was “a decisive and long-awaited step towards the end of the political transition”. On Sunday 4 January, the Guinean Supreme Court validated the victory of junta leader Mamadi Doumbouya in the election, with 86.72% of the vote in the first round. “The European Union calls for the next elections needed to complete the return to constitutional order (four years after the military seized power, editor’s note) to be held under open, transparent and inclusive conditions”, added the spokesman in a statement. He added that the EU stood ready to continue its long-term partnership with Guinea, based on shared interests. (CG)
