20/11/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 18 November, the European Union expressed its “concern” about recent developments affecting preparations for the presidential and local elections in Honduras scheduled for Sunday 30 November. Through the spokesperson for the European External Action Service, it is calling on the Honduran authorities and political class to ensure that the electoral bodies act “independently” and in accordance with the country’s Constitution. President Xiomara Castro, who is not standing as a candidate, has accused the opposition parties of fomenting electoral fraud to prevent her ruling Libre party from winning, following the disclosure of recordings implicating a member of the National Electoral Council. The opposition cries manipulation. Difficulties were also encountered in transporting electoral materials throughout the Central American country. The EU has sent an Election Observation Mission to Tegucigalpa (see EUROPE 13723/28). (MB)
