Although the global rate of energy efficiency is set to improve by 1.8% in 2025 - up from around 1% in 2024 - according to a new report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) published on Thursday 20 November, progress is expected to fall below 1% in the EU and the United States.
This comes after several years of solid performance following the energy crisis. The IEA points out that energy efficiency measures accounted for two-thirds of the savings in gas consumption by European households during the energy crisis.
At the same time, progress in energy intensity in 2025 is estimated at over 3% in China and over 4% in India, well above their respective averages.
Generally speaking, the world is still a long way from achieving the targets set by COP28 in Dubai for 2030, since the current global rate of improvement is well below the 4% target.
