Every year, Europe records 58,000 new cases of cervical cancer and 27,000 deaths linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that can be prevented by vaccination and screening. A report (https://aeur.eu/f/jjr ) by the European Cancer Organisation (ECO), published on Thursday 20 November, revealed that uptake of screening varies widely from country to country: from over 80% in some northern countries to less than 50% elsewhere. The obstacles are often socio-economic, geographic or linked to healthcare systems. They also particularly affect women from rural areas, those on lower incomes, or people with disabilities or migrant backgrounds. Experts are calling for urgent measures (use of primary HPV screening, investing in robust registries) to achieve the target of 90% of women screened by 2030, in line with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
