EU opposes outgoing President’s decree ordering recount of presidential election

Brussels, 13/01/2026 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 13 January, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) expressed the European Union’s “concern” following the adoption by the outgoing president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, of a decree ordering a recount of the November 2025 presidential election, in which businessman Nasry Asfura was declared the winner with less than a 1% lead over Salvador Nasralla (see EUROPE 13780/19), who denounced the result as fraudulent. “The EU reiterates its support for the work of the Honduran electoral institutions and the official proclamation of results by the National Electoral Council, which recognised Nasry Asfura as the country’s legitimate president-elect”, said the spokesperson. Denouncing manipulation, Ms Castro felt that by pardoning former president, Juan Orlando Hernández, from the same party as Mr Asfura, on the eve of the election, while he was in prison in the United States for drug trafficking, US President Donald Trump had influenced the election. Mr Asfura is due to take office on 27 January. (MB)
