On Monday 12 January, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, announced that he would be participating in the Davos Economic Forum on 19 and 20 January.
He will stress the importance of the rule of law for sustainable prosperity, fair competition and growth.
Alain Berset believes that “when law gives way to arbitrariness, investment retreats, risk rises and prosperity fractures”.
“Democracy cannot thrive without trust, and trust is built on integrity. When corruption goes unpunished, citizens lose faith in democratic institutions - and markets lose confidence in the system”, he adds.
This speech will be part of the New Democratic Pact for Europe initiated by the Secretary General, which calls on economic players to strengthen democratic institutions and the independence and integrity of the judiciary as “the foundations of a stable and competitive investment climate”.
Alain Berset will also address the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence, to which the Council of Europe has devoted a new Framework Convention. (Original version in French by Véronique Leblanc)
