24/09/2025 (Agence Europe) – European funds should not be paid to organisations that attack European citizens and people in distress at sea, 42 humanitarian and civil society organisations demanded on Wednesday 24 September in a letter to the relevant European Commissioners, Magnus Brunner and Dubravka Šuica. The SOS MEDITERRANEE vessel was attacked in August by Libyan coastguards from a boat transferred by Italy as part of an EU programme. Funding from the EU and Italy has “enabled and legitimised abuses”, says the letter. The Commission must “suspend cooperation with Libya in the field of search and rescue, as well as urging Italy to terminate its 2017 Memorandum of Understanding with the country”. The NGOs are also calling on the Commission to fund and coordinate a European search and rescue programme led by the Member States in the central Mediterranean. Link: https://aeur.eu/f/il7 (SP)
