18/06/25 (Agence Europe) – The new Euratom safeguards regulation (https://aeur.eu/f/heg ), published in the EU’s Official Journal on Monday 16 June, will enter into force on 6 July. This regulation, based on a European Commission proposal of December 2023 and replacing the previous Regulation (Euratom) No 302/2005, updates the basic rules on the declaration of nuclear materials to take account of the various developments in the nuclear sector and information technologies in recent years. The draft regulation was approved by the EU Council on 18 February (see EUROPE 13582/3) and formally adopted by the Commission on 26 May. The regulation defines more broadly the obligations of users of nuclear materials, such as the declaration of specific information to the Commission and the keeping of operating records. This is to ensure that civilian nuclear materials are not diverted from their intended uses. (PLD)
