18/06/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 18 June, the European Parliament approved by a comfortable majority (386 votes in favour, 132 against, 49 abstentions) the institutional political agreement on the European Union’s future macroeconomic assistance to Egypt worth €4 billion over the period 2025-2027. Regarding this aid to be of “major strategic importance”, Céline Imart (EPP, French), Parliament’s rapporteur, criticised in a press release the “sterile posturing” of the The Left and Greens/EFA groups, which rejected the agreement, considering the provisions relating to respect for human rights too weak. The aid will be paid in three loan instalments (maturing in 35 years with a grace period for repayments). It will be subject to the implementation, by Egypt, of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to be agreed with the EU, and of the 2024-2027 programme linking Cairo to the IMF (see EUROPE 13644/24).
