The Court of Justice of the European Union has condemned Greece for failing to update the management plans for 14 river basin districts, including five international ones, within the required timeframe, and for failing to update the associated flood risk management plans, in a ruling handed down on Thursday 5 June (case C-359/24) (see EUROPE 13370/35).
As part of the European policy governing the management of water resources (Water Directive 2000/60 and Flood Directive 2007/60), Member States are required to update the management plans for their river basin districts, as well as the maps of flood-prone areas and the flood risk management plans for these areas, no later than 15 years after the directives come into force, and every six years thereafter.
The Court condemns Greece for failing to fulfil these obligations.
