European Commission consults on future communication to pave way for nuclear fusion commercialisation

On Tuesday 3 June - and until 1 July - the European Commission opened a public consultation in the context of its future strategy for nuclear fusion, which it intends to present in the first quarter of 2026, in order to “assure effective and harmonised application of appropriate safety requirements in the EU and facilitate the deployment of the technology”.

This strategy, which will take the form of a communication, aims in particular to allow the EU to “maintain and strengthen its technological leadership”, when third countries such as the UK and Japan have already presented their own strategies for the development of fusion.

Based on the ITER international scientific project, the adoption of this strategy “will pave the fastest possible way to the fusion energy commercialisation”, says the Commission (see EUROPE 13609/15, 13623/6).

Following publication of this communication, a detailed action plan, with performance indicators and milestones, will be prepared, according to the Commission’s consultation document. The services involved in the merger strategy (DG Energy and DG Research and Development) will be responsible for monitoring it.
