On Tuesday 3 June, the European Commission updated the list of airlines subject to operating bans or restrictions within the European Union.
All air carriers certified in Suriname and Tanzania have been included on the list. Assessments carried out by EU aviation safety experts have revealed that the civil aviation authorities in these countries are unable to ensure compliance with international safety standards for air carriers.
The shortcomings identified in these two countries cover operational and regulatory areas, including a shortage of qualified personnel, ineffective processes for monitoring flight operations and airworthiness, and non-compliance with international safety standards by the civil aviation authorities of both countries and certified air carriers.
Following this update, a total of 169 airlines are now banned from flying in EU skies. 142 of these are certified in 17 countries and are included in the list because of insufficient safety supervision by the authorities in these countries. Twenty-two others are certified in Russia. (Original version in French by Anne Damiani)
