14/05/25 (Agence Europe) – The ambassadors of the Member States to the European Union (Coreper) could attempt to reach an agreement on the ‘SAFE’ instrument of loans to countries wanting to increase their military spending, during an extraordinary meeting to be held on Sunday 18 May (see EUROPE 13639/4). One issue still to be resolved concerns the treatment of companies benefiting from subcontracting, Agence Europe learned following the Coreper meeting on Wednesday 14 May. This extraordinary Coreper meeting will take place on the eve of the EU/UK summit, at which EU and UK leaders could sign a security and defence partnership, an essential condition for London’s participation in the ‘SAFE’ instrument. However, a number of bilateral issues, notably fishing rights, remain linked and may not be resolved until the last minute (see other news). (MB)
