On Wednesday 14 May, the European Commission announced a number of appointments to its key positions.
Austrian Johannes Hahn has been appointed EU Special Envoy for Cyprus. In this capacity, he will report to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and contribute to the settlement process under the aegis of the United Nations, in close cooperation with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.
Johannes Hahn has served three consecutive terms as European Commissioner: Regional Policy (2010-2014), European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations (2014-2019), and Budget and Administration (2019-2024).
In addition, Spanish national Daniel Calleja y Crespo is to become Head of Representation in Madrid, after having headed the Legal Service of the European Commission since 2020.
Finally, Portugal’s Hugo Monteiro Brilhante Sobral has been appointed Deputy Director General of the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (REGIO). A former head of cabinet to European Commissioner Elisa Ferreira, he has solid experience in cohesion policy and structural reforms. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
