In the run-up to the Three Seas Summit, to be held in Warsaw on 28 and 29 April, a group of MEPs - led by the European Conservatives and Reformists Group - sent a letter to the President of the European Council, António Costa, on Monday 14 April, calling for specific European funding to strengthen infrastructure, connectivity and resilience in the Three Seas region.
The Three Seas Initiative is a forum of Central and Eastern European countries, all of which are members of the European Union. It has thirteen member states (see EUROPE 12469/33).
In their letter, the MEPs emphasise the strategic importance of this region for the future of the European Union and stress the need to bridge existing gaps in transport, energy and digital infrastructure. They call for the creation of “a special fund within the EU cohesion policy framework to support strategic, transnational projects carried out under the Three Seas Initiative”. The letter also warns against the risk of a “two-speed Europe”.
