14/04/2025 (Agence Europe) – In a new report on the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI), published on Friday 11 April, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said that AI would transform the energy sector by driving up electricity demand from data centres. This demand is expected to more than double between now and 2030, reaching around 945 terawatt-hours (slightly more than Japan’s total electricity consumption). Demand for AI-optimised centres is expected to quadruple by 2030. These developments will help advanced economies to get “back on a growth footing after years of stagnating or declining demand”, according to the IEA, which explains that in these economies, data centres are expected to drive more than 20% of the growth in electricity demand between now and 2030.
