14/04/2025 (Agence Europe) – In a statement issued on Monday 14 April by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the European Union condemned the public executions of four men in the provinces of Nimroz, Badghis and Farah in Afghanistan. These men, who were convicted of murder, were executed in stadiums packed with tens of thousands of spectators. According to the news agency AFP, this is the highest number of executions in a single day since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. In response to these executions, the EEAS reiterated the EU’s firm opposition to the death penalty. “It is a cruel and inhumane punishment, which fails to act as a deterrent to crime and represents an unacceptable denial of the fundamental right to life and human dignity”, the statement says. The EU is therefore calling on the Taliban to halt all executions and to pursue a policy aimed at abolishing capital punishment. (PLD)
