20/12/24 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 20 December, the European Commission announced that it had made a payment of €10 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This aid is in addition to the €82 million already paid to the Agency in 2024. At a time when the Israeli Parliament has passed legislation jeopardising the existence of the UN agency, the Commission states in its press release that it remains “determined to provide financial and political support to enable UNRWA to fulfil its mandate at a time when needs are increasing critically”. It is also committed to closely monitoring the implementation of the recommendations of the Independent Review Panel and the conditions agreed with UNRWA in the context of EU funding, including recommendations resulting from an EU audit.
