On Friday 20 December, the European Union mobilised its civil protection mechanism for Mayotte and the African countries affected by cyclone Chido. Belgium, Germany, Italy and Sweden in particular offered shelters, following France’s request for assistance.
The Copernicus system has also provided emergency satellite mapping to local authorities in Mayotte and Mozambique to support relief efforts. The EU has also said it is ready to mobilise additional support through its rescEU stocks. €900,000 in emergency humanitarian aid has been allocated to the affected communities in Mozambique, to meet their needs for shelter, water and healthcare in particular.
The European Commission has also announced that five humanitarian airlift flights will provide 60 tonnes of emergency aid (accommodation equipment).
The Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, thanked “the Member States for their rapid support”. (Original version in French by Florent Servia)
