Pending the ‘Vision for the Future of Agriculture’ that the new Commissioner for Agriculture, Christophe Hansen, is expected to present on 19 February 2025, the EU’s agricultural organisations and cooperatives(Copa-Cogeca) presented its vision on the future of the Common Agricultural Policy, ’From the Field to Future’, on Thursday 19 December.
In particular, Copa-Cogeca is proposing “a fair competitiveness deal for farmers and agri-cooperatives”.
Copa-Cogeca is defending an increase in the CAP post-2027 budget and access to additional external funding, such as from the European Investment Bank (EIB) or a new Just Transition Fund.
In addition, these organisations want the next CAP to maintain direct payments. For Copa-Cogeca, the new CAP should be accompanied by a reassessment of cross-compliance, to reduce excessive requirements.
The organisation also advocates a balanced approach to sustainability and the possibility of using “innovative production methods”.
Finally, following the announcement of the end of the EU/Mercosur negotiations, Copa-Cogeca is calling for an EU trade policy aligned with agricultural interests. This should include reciprocal production standards.
